Panini's by Ed Milich
Pannini is a great little Italian bistro style sandwich shop in Signal Hill next to a motorcycle shop that I spend too much time at. The restaurant sprung up about four years back, and it has attracted a strong lunch crowd since very shortly after it opened.

The restaurant greets patrons with its classily decorated black and white tile floor, high chairs and tables, chrome fixtures as well as a few tables set up in front of the building for outdoor seating. The menu lists sandwiches served on fresh baguettes or as Paninnis (Italian pressed sandwiches), along with salads and a daily soup or two. One of my favorites is the turkey and cranberry paninni. This comes with a side of potato chips and I usually add a small side salad  and possibly soup, depending on how hungry I am. If you ask one of the pretty girls at the counter nicely, they may throw in an extra baguette for you to dip in your soup or eat with your salad. I’ve also had the roast beef sandwich from time to time as a change of pace, and it is equally good. Man oh man, but a ~10 inch sandwich on a baguette really does a workout on my upper palette, though. This is some serious crusty bread. The salad is a nice mixed green bistro salad and comes with a small piece of toasted bread. The soup changes from day to day, but is usually very good. I’ve had chicken okra soup and  potato soup in the past and both are worth ordering.

The wait at Panninni can be a bit long at lunchtime, and if you show up at 12:15, there may be a line out the door. As with any other popular lunch spot, arrive before noon for the quickest service. The restaurant features counter service only, which speeds things up a bit.

I usually spend about $11-12 for a sandwich, chips, soup and salad. Pannani is a great addition to this transforming, otherwise industrial/commercial neighborhood, and I have a feeling that they will be around for quite some time due to their strong lunch following.
