Poquito Mas by Ed Milich
We are blessed in SoCal to have a preponderance of great Mexican American lunch spots. When I lived in Ohio, good Mexican restaurants were few and far in between, unless you count Chi Chi’s and similar chains, which I don’t.  Poquito Mas is one of the more outstanding burrito/taco/enchilada lunch spots that I’ve encountered. They serve traditional Mexican American favorites, mostly with a healthy bent.

Recommended items include the shrimp burrito and the asada burrito. Combinations Beans are served whole, and black beans are available. They ever have vegetarian entrees, so non-mat eaters can stuff their faces, too.  Burritos come with a side of chips. The asada is well done- very tender and flavorful. The cheese is dispersed throughout the burritos, so you don’t hit a small pocket and get a mouthful of cheese all at once. Instead, the soft melted cheese is in every bite of your burrito.

The tortillas here are made fresh right in front of you, and I often spot an employee working the tortilla press.  For the burritos, the tortillas are grilled to perfection, slightly charred on the outside and chewy on the inside.

Poquito Mas’ salsa bar is well tended and stocked with onions, cilantro, and 5 or 6 different salsas from a green tomatillo salsa to a roasted chili salsa. I usually grab 2 or 3 different salsas to pour over my burrito, one bite at a time, as I’m eating it.

The store in Torrance is at Crenshaw and Pacific Coast Highway, conveniently located next to both the Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe’s, so I can grab lunch and then grab a few things at the store. This is simply a great place for a SoCal Mexican lunch.
